Monroe County is a county in Florida that encompasses the islands of the Florida Keys and the Florida Everglades. Its county seat is in Key West and its population was 73,090 as of the 2010 census. Over 99% of the population of Monroe County lives in the islands of the Florida Keys, since the Florida Everglades are virtually uninhabited. The county was founded in 1823 and named after James Monroe, the 5th president of the United States.
